On our Fremont second story, we retrofitted the entire home with 15-foot-deep drilled piers so the foundation could carry the new floor. A structural engineer evaluates your soil and foundation during design, so you know what is needed before construction is priced.

We strongly recommend moving out. The roof comes off, utilities are shut off at times and parts of the house are supported by temporary shoring. Plan to be out for roughly the length of construction.
